Hello All, Like to share my experience in upgrading my personal charge card (AMEX GREEN.)... I have been thinking of doing this for a long time, and tried looking for information on this forum... One fine day while I was on the phone with amex customer service, I asked about upgrading my card. They said that would be no problem at all, and this account has been pre-approved for an upgrade a long time ago... I once again STRESSED on the point UPGRADE... They said my card account number will change but my history with amex would remain... Ok.. 2 weeks later I recieve my new Amex Gold card in the mail.. (HAPPY).. called up to activate it... This when i find out that I now have 2 charge cards.. (thats tolerable too...) ... asked them to close my green card.. Logged in to creditexpert... and i see a new inquiry from amex... (HARD INQ)... CALL AMEX MCS.. they advised me that all charge card upgrades are new applications... (what a crap of B.S.)... Hope this helps some poor sole trying to upgrade his amex card.... Nitin
2 things... 1. How can they do an application on you with out you giving them the info? I don't get that... 2. It has been my understanding (through trial and error) that the only way they don't check your credit for the upgrade is when they send you an invite to upgrade (anyone know anything different?). Maybe you went the wrong route to upgrade. Maybe you should of called the number on the back of the card and selected the option to cancel. That takes you to a different department with a higher authority to make changes. They probably could of got you into Gold (someone correct me if I'm wrong) w/o inquiry. Regardless...you got the card and that's all that matters. The inquiry didn't cost you THAT many FICO points...but still!
4 point eq and 5 on exp.... NO application was made... the C.S. read the terms of the new card and ended the call with - you should recieve your card in 5-7 days... Nitin
You don't even need a SS# to pull a credit report - any existing account number is all that's needed (which Amex would have). Congrats on the upgrade - I wouldn't sweat the inquiry. Did you get the Rewards Plus? -mj
Rewards Plus: Nope, I got the regular amex gold... didnt see the point in spending the extra 35 bucks... (Gold card w/ MR - 75+40=115, reward plus - 150).. I dont have any authorized users.. plus I didnt see the point in borrowing 10k MR points... Are there any other benefits between the 2 that i am missing.. (Gold or Gold Rew Plus).. FYI - The regular CS number on the back of my personal card did the so called upgrade for me.. (no need to call MORE or MCS...) Nitin
