I don't know if anyone has had this problem .. I recently applied to AMEX for Gold Skymiles Card. AMEX declined credit for the following reason: " previous account was cancelled ". My score was high enough for getting the card(650). I called for a reconsider and was told, because I had AMEX on my BK7 over 15 years ago, they would not issue me another card. After talking with the CSA for awhile, she placed me on hold then came back and gave me AMEX's bankrutpcy legal department. She told me maybe there is something they could do. But AMEX does not issue you a card if you had them in your BK action. Before I talk to legal, is there any recourse or has anyone else experienced this from AMEX?

Yup, I had the same problem and just said to hell with them. There are plenty of other credit cards who will happily take your money.

What's so special about AMEX, anyway?

Nothing, they are vastly overrated in most respects. There balance transfers are their strong points.

They probably won't give you a card unless you agree to pay back the amount you owed them.

Hedwig is right . . . ask them about their "Oasis" progran if you really want one of their products.

That's the only reason I got a card with American Express, for the Delta miles. I wish they also had a Visa or MC.

I'm not sure what the OASIS program is, but I think you pay off the balance you owed them and you get a new account. I'm not sure if they do it for the Delta card or only the regular card.

The number that the CSR gave you is probably the best place to start.

They do it for all of their products as far as I know. Essentially, you pay the old balance and the issue you a new card with that amount for a limit.

They also report the old derogatory as paid as agreed.

Another positive is that they will report your new account as being opened as the date the old card was. Neat way of adding history.

If you have filed BK, AMEX will not approve you (If the BK is reporting on your CR's).

The Oasis program is offered to those cardmembers of AMEX that have an old Optima/Charge product that charged-off and was PAID IN FULL. Usually as part of the payment process, you get a letter from AMEX, with an application to sign and send in for your card.

Thanks for this info I called Amex and actually started working on resolving an old credit card account I had in college. I did some online research and found this info and phone number and I was able to move towards a resolution.

I may be wrong but I think BK laws don't allow a debt included in BK to be paid off later?

Seems I have read that & it stated it would be a violation of BK laws.

I've never had a Amex or defaulted on one. Honestly I don't think I will ever app for one. They can shut your acct down without warning and make you send all kinds of financial docs to get it reinstated.

They sound too high maitenance to me. But alot of peeps luv em. To each thier own.

I believe that you can voluntarily reaffirm a debt after BK. That's probably why they have a special department to deal with it. I bet you have to specifically reaffirm.

It would be illegal for them to just come after you, but if you reaffirm you are owning up and giving them permission.
