Is Associates National Bank a step up from Providian?

I'm starting to trade up cards and I'm solidly between sub and prime.

thinking ANB would also open the gas card door.

Something here is wrong. This is the second time today that I agree with the content of your posts :)

Yes, GetDumb sucks, and yes, ANB does present some excellent products. To restate my case w/ them, ANB has given me a Classic w/ 18.99 APR. A few months later, it was upgraded to a Gold w/ 9.49% APR. Increases are automatic every 4 months. Customer service is Citi-standard (as well as Citi-owned).

    :)

I think I'll cancel ye olde Getsmartwhenyoucancelit and go for an ANB card instead.

They could be a good stepping stone... one I hadn't considered until I saw an old post of yours...

Hmmmm. I'm taking your advice and you're agreeing with me... maybe this is the seventh sign :)

i think associates autodeclines bankruptcies. maybe manual override will work though?

I think the Associates gas cards are easier to get than even their subprime Visa. One reason I accepted and used their gas cards was to open the door for a Visa. Sure enough, after about 4 months with a Texaco card their first offer of a Visa (at prime +15.99%) came in the mail.

Do you know how long their blacklist lasts?

That what I thought as well (that they declined BK's). I do have the BP (Amoco) and Shell gas cards, but have had those since before the BK, however have kept them through the BK and are in good standing. I thought I even read somewhere that Associates will decline a secured card with them after a BK, but then again maybe I am confusing this with Chase.

Does anyone know or have experience with Associates as far as getting a Visa card post BK?

I can't say for certain with the visa, but I did speak with someone regarding a Citgo card.

I was told 24 mos post bk, 3 lines or more of positive history post bk, and they'll manually reconsider.

they strongly suggested I reapply in January. I asked bluntly if it'd be a lesson in futility (I didn't really want the extra inq) and she assured me that, after the auto decline from the computer if the rest was good, I could get a manual override.

So I would guess that the visa may be similar.

Marie, you must be just ahead of me as far as a BK goes. I will be at the two year mark this time next year. I carried most of my cards through the BK and are in good standing to this day. I have added several cards since (FCNB, Cap 1, as well as a credit union credit card). To me my CU Visa card is a step up. Maybe at the 24 month mark I will try Associates. I just wonder if they will decline a secured card as I thought I might have read. Let us know when you get your Citgo card. I would be interested in knowing if they do the override.

    thought I would chime in...

I was auto-declined for the Associates Visa when I applied in 3/01. I currently have a 6 yr old chap 7 bk (at the time the bk was 5 yrs old),
after I was declined, I called a supervisor in customer service, they manually overrode it a day later. it has a low limit, but I am glad to have the tradeline ($1000.00), I started at 20.49% - I called last month and they lowered it to 17.99%. They told me they do not review the account for a full 12 months before increasing the credit line. We'll see what happens.

    Hope this info helps...
