1) Remove any and all auto recurring charges 2) Bring the account balance to $0 and wait for the mailed statement that reflects a $0 balance 3) Call and request them to close it. Give a reason if you want, but it is not necessary 4) Check your credit report 30-days later to make sure it is really closed and by "closed at consumers request" All done!
Cap1 rebate an annual fee? Are you serious? Be thankful they don't charge an "Account Termination Fee" (or maybe I shouldn't give them any ideas). Nevertheless, the above are good recommendations
I closed my paid off account via CMRRR with the cut up credit card enclosed. Cap1 sent a polite letter thanking me for my business along with acknowleding the receipt of the credit card and confirming that the account would be reported as closed at consumer request.
You may have autorecurring charges for things like internet ISPs, etc, where you provided your CC number for them to bill you monthly. (You might also have agreed to multiple monthly billings for some purchase if you are a QVC addict, made a donation to your PBS affilliate or other charity to be spread over several months, or some similar type of charge that you specifically agreed to.) Review your last few statements. You don't want charges showing up after you close your account, just like you don't want outstanding checks showing up if you close your checking account. They might reject them, in which case the party you agreed to pay will still want payment, or they might accept them, in effect re-opening the account.
