hurricane5...man, that's scary. It doesn't surprise me though. AOL is known for making it VERY DIFFICULT to cancel with them once you sign up.

I think I must have been lucky, though. Four years ago, when I got my first PC for home, I took AOL up on their offer for free service (30 days). After about 4 days though, I realized how crappy their service was (very slow internet connection, AOL pages had way too many graphics on them and took forever to load) so I canceled it online. The first time I tried, it worked, but they did call me at least 6 times in the next two weeks trying to get me to rejoin again.

I think people like your dad should start documenting all of these events and bring them to the attention of the FCC. If it can be demonstrated before the FCC that AOL trains their customer service reps to lie to customers who are trying to close their accounts, AOL could have some PR problems. Maybe try to get a local TV or radio station involved.

If uninstalling AOL doesn't get it off your computer try this next:
On the start menu select "Run..."
In the box that comes up type "msconfig" (minus quotes, of course)
Click on the Startup tab in the box that comes up.
Go down the checklist and uncheck everything that has AOL or AmericaOnline in its name or path.
Click Ok or Apply to confirm.

Any file you uncheck on the Startup page will no longer load when you turn on your computer. After doing this be careful about running AOL as it may add itself back to the Startup list.
