I have had a Cross Country Bank charge off for $3,009 on my credit reports for a long time. It should be past statute of limitations in about 6 months or so. (Experian says charge off date 9/03; Equifax claims date of last payment 9/02; and not sure what the heck Trans Union says). I have had numerous collection companies attempt to collect on this account over the past 3 years but none have been able to validate and stopped harrassing me. This was a charge that my daughter used that I was unaware of and amassed about $1,000 on. With all the late charges, fees, etc. it stopped at the $3,009 figure about 3 years ago. I did pay some payments on this about 3 years ago and then stopped. Have heard nothing about this for the past year or so, so I was just waiting for it to go the 4 years and then send out sol letters to anyone else who might attempt to collect on it. Now - here comes the odd part. About 4 weeks ago I began filing with the 3 bureaus to delete some (all legit and paid in full by me) paid collection accts, etc. I disputed the cross country bank as fraudulent charges, which has been posted on my credit report as my statement for the past few years, so nothing new there. All of a sudden, I get a letter addressed to "The Estate of [my name]. The letter is offering condolences on my death and if a relative of mine could supply them with my death certificate, and the executor of my estate, they will "assist" with the collection of this amount from my estate!!!!

Where they ever got this information from is beyond my wildest imagination! Never have I professed to have died to any credit bureau!! What they heck do I do now with this????? Any suggestions will be MOST appreciated. My biggest worry was that the collectors would begin to start up again and I would have to keep on validating as I've done in the past. Do I have to tell them I am alive and I don't know where in the heck they got this info from (obviously one of the cra's who I was disputing other things with), or do I just ignore this and hope I can wait out the sol?

Alive and breathing, I thank anyone for any help.

    Linda
