Apply for AMEX Blue?

Ok, after cleaning up my EFX report, I decided to apply for an AMEX card. I hear it's *the* card to have for people to think highly of you.

Well I mistakenly applied to the Optima platinum (thinking I'd get it being that I had a score of 721, and no derogs) which has high requirements as I came to find out (almost $400 annual fee, and minimum $100K income). I was denied for having balances on my cards, too many inq. I had 6 hards at the time.

I'm thinking blue would be a better bet for me, and I've lost 2 hards. Does anyone know how many hards are too many according to blue? My EQ is currently showing 24% usage on my revolving lines. Good idea to apply now? or wait till all the hards fall off? (I currently have 5 credit cards, but I'm thinking I might close one of them soon)

What you applied for was the Platinum charge card, not the Optima Platinum credit card (which has no annual fee).

4 INQs may be too much (depending on your other score factors). I'd wait till there are no more than 2 in the last 6 months. They also seem to have INQ # cutoffs, and sometimes if there are too many, that alone is a reason for denial regardless of one's score.

No card makes people think highly of you in the long run. You may impress some teenage cashier, but so what.

There are people on FlyerTalk who actually spend $150,000 a year and are ready to pay $2,500 more in annual fees, all in hopes of qualifying for Amex's most prestigious card, the Centurion. Are their lives more enjoyable once they get the card? I think everyone knows the answer to that.

I went to their website the day my last derog fell off my EFX report thinking I was invinsible :)

I just applied for the first platinum card I saw, and after submitting, I read the terms (yeah I know I shouldve read them before hitting "submit"). The card I applied for happened to be the one that had the huge annual fee and the minimum $100K annual income.

From the looks of it, I think I'd definitely qualify for blue... but I'll wait till the hards fall off now

In my experience it is not that hard to get blue. My boyfriend got one with 2 delinquents on the report. I would suggest you do that.

my little two cents ~ hope it helps!

Why don't you call AMEx and tell them exactly what you did wrong? Tell them you wanted the Blue instead. Heck, you've already wasted a hard, maybe you can turn that into lemonade.

I agree .. its worth a try. Never tried with AMEX but tried with other CCC and they were more than happy to comply.

Dude, Blue is the coolest card around:) Chicks will drop their jaws when they look at AMEX ;). CS and other card benefits will get a B+ though. There are lot many good cards out there and AMEX is losing market share every year to visa and master card.

PS- How did to confuse AMEX blue with platinum they are like Demi Moore and Janet Reno lol

I wouldn't get all caught up in having amex blue just because chicks and others think so highly of it. People would be alot more impressed, that which is not always so apparent, low debt, large checking/savings account balance and in general good credit card terms.

When I cashiered...I "CHECKED OUT" every card...

"Oh, that's the card that costs $300 for the privilege of paying in full"

"Oh, that's the card with such a low limit and ton's of fees that you are OVER-LIMIT before the card can be used"

    "Oh, I have that card"

Are you freaking kidding me,,, If you actually care about what someone thinks of you, because of the Credit Card in your wallet. you had best use that credit card to charge some psychotherapy. I have never in my life judged someone by the papaer thin piece of PVC in their wallet, And here is a hint for all of you people who think that Amex and their ridicoulously high annual fees are cool. I am personal friends with several MLB baseball players, and even these multi multi multi millionares say that if you spend your money on these fees your a moron. BTW i have the simple No annual fee optima, and it works just fine, so im nt some salty person who just got rejected.

I don't think there is anything wrong with paying an annual fee, only if it is an affinity card or Amex with MR. If you want to carry a balance on the card, have a choice (many of people have not so good credit) and still pickup a card with an annual fee - then yes, you are a moron ;)

As many here know, I am a long time Amex booster,
and I still think that Amex has the best cards out there.

    HOWEVER--

Their once fabulous customer service has deteriorated to the point that they now have me
    questioning my loyalty.

This really should be a new thread, but I'm curious--

Has anyone else experienced a decline in service at Amex??

Decline in CS @ AmEx? Definitely!
I think personally that they must have just opened their doors and let all the illiterate people of Utah flood in and pick up a head set!
I swear, with one of my accounts, I called THREE times to clear up a dispute- that's twice as many as it's ever taken. Also, it seems as though they may be approving more applications. Even my neighbor who filed for BK a few years ago has one. I know that it's not the BIGGEST deal in the world, but, that's my gripe...
