I am still totally shocked I have been wanting to have an AMEX card in my wallet for so long, anyway my husband applied for the AMEX blue and was not approved for it but they did approve him for the gold, why would they approved for the gold and not the blue, seems strange to me, anyway they pulled EQ and the score is exactly 700. A question for anyone, does this open the door for any personal AMEX products ?, if so will they offer it or do we have to apply ? Thanks !
Amex likes you to get a charge card like Gold or Green, make the payments on time, and then apply for a credit card like Blue or Optima Platinum. Why? I think it's because they have a hidden limit on the charge cards that they gradually raise as you use the card over time. This gives them a clever way to offer you a very low credit limit to start. Needless to say, I don't believe their "no preset spending limit" slogan. It just means you have to negotiate some of your purchases instead of knowing when you "leave home" what you'll be able to afford.
Sorry, I didn't mean to insult your new Gold card. I think it's great. Congratulations! I was just trying to explain why Amex tries to push the charge cards, and why it's easier to get approved for the charge cards.
No I didn't take it that way at all it just seems weird that they would give you a charge card instead of giving you a credit limit. I didn't take that personal at all I appreciate the input, I want this to open the door for personal accounts as well. You have gave me more information than I had before I posed the question so THANKS !
Clever analysis rg-- I never really thought about it before-- but (IMHO) you are absolutely right! That said-- if you use the heck out of your open amex, and consistently make your payments on time, they will let you charge huge amounts no problemo. Interestingly, they sent me a letter re my Delta Skymiles card that ala Citi AAdvantage they would now let me go over my limit without penalty as long as all over limit charges are paid in full.
