I had an MBNA MasterCard in my name. Fell behind in payments and MBNA sent me an offer to make payments on the account. This was in February. They said they'd reduce the interest rate to 14% (from 25 or 26% I think) and my monthly payments would be $76, automatically deducted from our bank account. First payment was set up for 2/26. Last month (March) they call and give me some line that in order to bring the past due charges current could they change the payment, for March only to $80 - figured $4 wasn't a big deal and okayed it. Well today they call again and give me some line that the original person I spoke with was wrong in telling me that the payments should be $76 per month, they should be $92 and they want my ok to change to that amount. I feel like I'm being scammed, is this right? Do I have any rights in saying no? The person I spoke with on the phone today wasn't much help in explaining it to me. Thanks for any input,
why don't you fax them over the letter they sent you stating the terms of the agreement. This should clear up any discrepancies. Ask that they comply with the agreement terms they offered you in writing. bugman
The FAX is a great idea. It occurs to me that if they are admitting thier error, that they should be able to FIX thier error. They can just go into the system and bring you current with the amount you originally authorized. I've had cc ompanies do this same thing in the past. It's frustrating!
bugman & gold - thanks! I have found the original letter confirming the agreement and will fax it to them and request they honor the terms of the agreement - which they presented to me.
Cool. Let us know how this turns out for you. It seems like a TOTAL scam to me. I've had CSRs pull the same thing on me before. Sometimes they are "pleasant" sounding and half-apologetic for their co-worker's error -- but they still think *I* should have to pay up for their error. I used to fall for that, but NOW I'm empowered through hours and hours of CNet reading. Makes me think I should start a "how I was scammed" thread here. It might be useful. Some are even worse than this, 'specially when car dealers are involved.
send a copy to your bank stating you only authorize $XX per month taken out. otherwise, they technically don't need your permission to wipe you out (which is illegal but i have seen it happen).
