If so, did you do this via retention, or was it automatic (in the mail)?

I got my APR lowered from 23.99% to 16.99% and my limit increased initially from $500 to $5000 now. I paid for the $49 increases but got those all refunded via retention. The APR reduction (and subsequent refund of my annual fee) I got from continuously writing to them at Planetfeedback. I'd suggest you'd go that route first and see how much you can squeeze out of Providian. Good luck!
Thanks...did the $5K limit allow you to upgrade to the platinum level card?
No, but I'll get their eventually...with enough haggling. By that time though, I'll be able to scrap them and get AMEX.
