what has your reaction been when people asked for id when using a credit card. I was coming back from a wonderful Miami vacation yesterday where I spent considerable amounts in many places without a problem, and some clerk in the ft lauderdale airport asked for my id when buying 26 dollars worth of tourist junk in a gift store at the Fort Lauderdale airport. I was furious and demanded an explanation and ended up paying cash, but it left a bad flavor for an otherwise wonderful trip. Are you also insulted when someone asks for id?

This is a little off topic, but I live in South Fla & was wondering how your trip was? Usually people complain about Miami (depending on where you are from). I get asked for my I.D. alot, especially on my primer cards (my BMW card & Amex Blue alot) b/c I think they assume b/c I'm young that those aren't my cards.

The trip was wonderful. I stayed at the Turnberry Isle resort and shopped at the Bal Harbour shops. Both of those high end places know how to treat people. I guess that is what really got me going. I was treated so well at those places and bought everything I wanted without any problem and told thank you so much dr..... and then that jerk at the airport shop had the nerve the question me over some minor purchase. I think that is why I almost lost it.

Good idea George. I am going to phrase it exactly that way the next time I have a problem with this.

By asking for an ID with a signed card the merchant is violating the credit card agreement with Visa/MC/ etc... When asked I always refuse and inform the clerk that no ID is necessary.. You could always speak with the Manager also

They can not refuse the sale because you don't show an additional ID

Can one of you guys, George perhaps, PLEASE point me in the right direction as to where I find this information. I told my boss that we were probably in violation for asking for ID's and he looked at me like I had two heads!

I ran a few searches and all I seemed to find is that it's OK to ask for an ID but it's against the agreement to write any of that personal information down on the sales slip. Do merchant agreement's differ from store to store, or are they all pretty much standard?

Also ran across another thing I thought was interesting. I believe it was on the BBB's website. Said something to the effect of "When paying by check a merchant may not record a credit card number on the check". Now, I find that interesting because my local Post Office requires you to do that!
You have to have 2 forms of ID, one of them being a credit card and they write it down on the check.

Anyhow, sorry for getting long winded there. If someone could point me to where it specifically says that a merchant may not ask for ID when presented with a credit card so that I could print it out and prove that I do not have two heads that would be great! Geesh, talk about a run-on sentence! LOL

I don't happen to have a MERCHANT AGREEMENT available...I DON'T WORK IN BENTONVILLE ARKANSAS

THIS IS INFORMATION YOU WANT...F.Y.I.--IT IS NOT FROM VISA/MC...BUT IT HAS LOTS OF VALUABLE INFORMATION...

VISA and M/C have their own web sites...you may find more there...or do a www.google.com search...
