I checked into them and received the following email. I'm dealing with their office in Brandon, FL and they are required to have a license to operate in FL. I think this can help others as well.

    Thank you for your inquiry.

According to our records Asset Acceptance Corp. is not currently registered in this state as a collection agency. However, it may possible that the manner in which they operate may permit them to operate under an exemption from the registration.

Regarding your complaint, I would recommend the following steps:

    1) Write to Asset Acceptance Corp and advise them that you dispute the debt and request documentation verifying the validity of the questioned debt.
**This should be accomplished by certified mail so that you can maintain proof.

    2) If they do not respond to your written verification request and continue to attempt to collect the debt you may be in a position then to
    make a formal complaint.
**Formal complaints must be submitted in writing to our office. You will need to obtain a complaint form from our office to accomplish
this. You may obtain a complaint form from our Department at:

    Department of Banking and Finance
    Division of Financial Investigations
101 East Gaines Street, Suite 516
    Tallahassee, Florida 32399-0350

    Telephone: (850) 410-9275
    Fax: (850) 410-9628

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance

    That's nothing new.

I tried to use this as ammo. but they are not required to be licensed in MI. They say they are a specialty finance company not a collection agency.

Try using MI atty general. The state of FL laws doesn't have any teeth. They are very familiar with them. I called and they knew who they were right away.

I finally received the result of the investigation the dept of banking and finance initiated. They fulfilled their obligations as far as the state of FL is concerned and closed the case. It was deleted anyway so I don't care.

Call the state of MI atty gen. They are more familiar with them. File a complaint with state of FL DBF. The more complaints they get about this company more likely they are to start complying with the law or delete your collection because you are an annoyance.
