I have 5 gas cards from Associates National Bank. Two of them, CITGO and Amoco, I obtained online.

I recently applied for another Texaco card online, in order to get a higher credit limit. I got back a strange letter with an Amoco letterhead, saying I could only apply for one card, and won't get the Texaco card.

Since I already have 5 cards from them, this must mean that I can only apply for one card ONLINE.

Since I already got two cards online from them, this policy may be of recent origin.

    Richguy,

I think they limited 2 accounts that you can have just like Citibank cards.
By the way, I only have Shell Card and I don't need Texaco because Texaco Gas Station also accept Shell Gas Card. By the way, my brother had a Citgo Card and they upgraded his Citgo Gas Card into Citgo Visa without applying.

    Ender,

They usually credit report from Equifax.

We've got Citgo, Shell, Amoco, Texaco and a Phillips 66 Mastercard all of which came as preapproved offers from Associates (now Citi). They pulled a hard inq on each one after we sent the preapproval in. They did not do a soft inq before they sent the offers.

I believe the origin of our preapprovals was from 10/2000 when we applied for an auto loan through Lending Tree and got an offer back from Associates. (We actually got 2 identical offers from Associates and from some other name they used, giggo I think. But checking the fine print showed they were both Associates.) The rate was lousy though, something like 14%, and we got a much better deal through our bank.

This was the only prior dealing we had with Associates. About 3 months later we got the preapproved offer for the Amoco card. After using it for 4-5 months we started getting the offers for the others. The last one being the Phillips 66 MC. The limits on most are around $500 so they're not much good for adding to your average credit limit, but since we only use each for around $20 a month, they do help our ratios and our number of positive tradelines. (And it seems they've been reporting a somewhat higher limit to the CRAs than the limit actually is, so that helps too.)

I don't think online access is available for any of them, which is a big negative for us. (At least it wasn't available when we got the cards, I haven't checked lately.)

We're in SC and they pulled a hard Equifax for every one of the cards. I don't know for sure what our scores were at the time, but I'm going to guess around 600, give or take a few.

There was one huge benefit to having had these cards for a few months. We had an old (5-6 year) charge off with Citi which was still showing a $500 past due. (There had been a settlement deal years ago, but the account was still showing as past due.) We faxed a goodwill request to Citi, asking to either let us pay the outstanding balance they showed as still owing or if not, was there anything else we could do to reestablish a positive relationship with them. We referenced the positive tradelines we had with these gas cards which were now Citi accounts. Result - they deleted the old chargeoff.

A month later we did the Citi BDD and ended up with a Platinum Select and a $17,500 CL.

Bottom line, In our situation, I think all of those little gas card accounts paid off in spades!

    ng,

It take a while to merge into one system and it still operate on its own division. It is confused. My Diners Club card is now transferred to Citibank USA starting next month.

    ng,

I got approval for my Diners Club within 5 days without verify any information. By the way, I have three Citibankcard accounts with them. So they don't verify anything.

    Ender,

I never got immediate approval online. I had to wait for the cards to come in the mail, which they did.
