AT&T Direct Bill Help Needed!

I'm an Active Duty Army Officer and I've been a little busy since 9/11. I just checked my scores and I just took a 40 point hit!

My AT&T Direct Bill Card, which I've had since 1988, is showing a one-time 30-day late of $24 &@*%^$#!! Dollars in the last 26 months (Which is as far back as it is detailed). Of course it's last month! I guess they got the payment after the 30 day mark. Honestly, it was probably my fault as I spend a lot of time gone getting units ready to deploy.

I called their Direct Bill Center and tried the "Guys, I've had this account for almost 15 years and you're showing a one-time for $24. It's now $0 balance but hasn't reflected yet. I know it wasn't your fault but this is keeping me from getting a mortgage. Please help your long-time faithful customer." routine.
They (clerk, supervisor, & manager) all gave me the party line of "we can't fix it because it's not our error" and "we're sorry for the inconvenience". The manager would not transfer me to her next higher-up so that I could make my case to someone who's Mother & Father were not Brother & Sister.

Does anybody have any ideas on how to get them to change this? PFB? Letters to the Chairman? Letter Bombs? (sic) Seriously, anybody got any ideas? 40 Points is killing me!

    Thanks for your time.

Anybody know where AT&T's corporate information can be found on the web? I might try contacting some executive VP to see if they can help.

Does anybody have any other ideas?

    I would call again.
You will get a different rep---keep trying

If that does not work PFB them!

As an active duty officer I am sure someone will help.

    Good Luck

Well, just to give them some bad publicity, I would take this post and make it into a public letter at Planet Feedback. Perhaps they will pay attention to that.

Post the location of the letter and we will all go make comments about AT&T's total insensitivity and lack of patriotism.

I appreciate the sentiment. Please don't think I'm trying to imply that just because I'm a Soldier, I don't have to pay my bills.

I just think it shows lousy customer service not to square away a guy who has been a customer for 15 years.

You would think that they'd cut a service member some slack in this day and age. Not to mention that I'm transferring to a unit that's actively engaged in Afganistan.

I guess the lost interest on $24 is of more importance than my multiple accounts (Phone, long distance, internet) and 15 years of faithful subscription to their services.

I don't think anybody thinks that - I certainly didn't. However, you are facing extenuating circumstances, and in this time, most businesses are showing a degree of understanding for active duty military. Many active duty and reserves personnel are being deployed without much notice, and have otherwise had their normal lives interrupted.

And that's on top of having been their good customer for all these years!

    I'd try 2 things.
    1. call back and ask for a correction under the Soldiers' and Sailors' Civil Relief Act... I actually don't think this little item is covered but you might get someone who's afraid to rock the boat...

The actual coverage can be found here:
    http://www.defenselink.mil/specials/Relief_Act_Revision/

    2. Tell them you didn't receive the bill in time and you think it's also covered under the Fair Credit Billing Act... do you have to write to them or can they correct your account now... if they agree they'll correct it get them to send it to you in writing

actually, I'm really surprised they aren't being more patriotic since you're in active duty...

Thanks. I'd thought about the Soldier's and Sailor's Relief Act but I figured it wouldn't cover this. It may be worth a shot but I was hoping to find an AT&T employee who still believed in helping customers. Maybe I was just delusional....

15 years of patronage vs. the interest on $24 for a week......yeah, Buddy! I didn't figure that was so hard to figure out........

They don't care, they are too busy getting new customers ;)

Close the account and they will telemarket you to get you back, LOL. Go out of their way to keep you - nunhunh.

I sent a "suggestion" - said they should fix this, that it's no way a treat a good customer.

Thanks Breeze, I appreciate the support. I guess that's the only way we have left to chime in on someone else's complaint.

I greatly appreciate all the support both on and off the board I'm getting on this one. If anyone else would like to click the link to "Write a Letter to this Company" on my behalf, I'd be extremely grateful.

    Thanks again,

    Dancer
