AT & T Universal-approval after BK?

I'm really glad to have access to this board, after my recent BK. I have a question and I'm wondering if anyone out there has actual knowledge about my question.

My Chapter 7 was discharged in September 2001. I had an AT & T Universal Platinum card that was included in the BK, with an approximate balance of $18,000. I recently received an offer from AT & T Universal for their regular card, with an introductory APR of 0 %, and then a variable rate, currently at 11.49 %.

If I were AT & T Universal, I wouldn't give me another one of their cards, after I discharged over $18,000 of their money. I've pulled my credit reports and know they have reviewed my Experian report, after my discharge. I would assume they just sent me an offer after reviewing my report, but they will deny me after reviewing their own records of my previous account. Has anyone got an At & T Universal card, after going through a BK and discharging debt from one of their cards?

Things have progressed nicely since my BK. I started out a month after my discharge with an unsecured card from FCNB with a credit limit of $300. I then got an unsecured Providian Smartchip card, with a credit limit of $2000. Sam's Club never canceled my credit with them, and I have a $3500 limit with them, that I have been using and paying off in full each month. All of these cards have high APR's, but I figure that's part of the price of the BK. I would imagine that I can get the APR's down, over time, by paying off the balances in full, each month.

My gut feeling is that AT & T would deny my application pursuant to their offer. On the other hand, I know I have a decent income and have been at my job for 3 years, so I'm really not sure what they would do. I'd appreciate advice from anyone who has had a similar situation to mine with AT & T Universal. Thanks.

I would not worry about getting the offer from AT&T, iIt would take awhile for any Company in which they had 18000.00 in balances discharged from a BKO, I work for a Major Credit Card Company in which the same situation has happened, If the Person did submitt the Application, as soon as I saw the BK( BKO in the summary Line, I send out a Decline due to Having Filed BKO... Good luck in reestablishing your credit.. But it would be a waste of time.. sending in the application..

    AT&T Universal is Citibank.

For folks who have declared BK, they require 7 years post-discharge piror to any new account being opened with the bank. You may still get the decline (BK stay on your cr for 10 yrs), but they have lee-way after 7.

If you included Citi on the BK, have any unsatisfied charge-offs with any Citi company, or settled for less than 100% on any Citi obligation, you likely will be on their "black list" which will preclude you from obtaining any Citi products until you resolve the old ones to their satisfaction.

The only exception I've ever seen to these rules (other than the computer "forgetting" which does happen) is Diners Club - they can override a decline due to BK, but you have to have documentation and a good story - i.e. medical, divorce, business failure, etc. Running up large personal debt and then filing BK without an extenuating circumstance won't get you any reconsideration.

    Good luck,
    mj

PS: the "offer" probably came from a 2-5 month old credit reporting prescreened list. Most of your "prime" junk-mail should dry up within a 4-5 months of the BK.

I agreee with mj, the list is old. The credit card offers from prime companies will dry up in a few months.

The old prime offers that I get are the ones from United Airlines/First USA due to me being on United's Mileage club.

I am in the same boat as you, I bk-13ed on three Citibank accounts. So even if I am clean on my CR, I will be on Citibank's internal blacklist.

I would not waste an inquiry on any prime products.

    Best regards,
    Mirage

Thanks for your suggestions. Nothing like the advice of those who know to keep me grounded in reality. I'm glad I didn't waste an inquiry on this one, only to get rejected.

Yes this board is great for questions like this! A friend of mine just today was denied by AT&T Universal. His Chp 7 is not quite 7 years old. The reason given was the bk. He also had included Citi in his bk. He also recd a pre-approval and thought maybe he had a shot at it.
