I've heard of people being added as an AU and the OC said they don't need to have a SS# to put it on their report.

How do they get it right without a SS#? Seems like it would be easy to set up new files this way.

I didn't give them a SS# for my son who just became an "AU" on one of my accounts...

"IF" it reports...it will report on your CURRENT CREDIT REPORT...they WON'T make a new one for you!!!

How do they know how to put it on your son's file without a SS#?

What I meant about a new file is if I make up a name for the AU will that create a credit file for that person?

This is where I don't understand hopw they are putting AU's on reports without a SS#. Am I missing something?

LOL!! I called last week about me being an AU and asked how they report it if they don't have my ss#. I was told the have ways. Does make you wonder doesn't it? I am sure there is someone else with my name somewhere. I guess they, hopefully, compare the name with the address. Kind of scary.

There are two thoughts that come to mind.

    1. Suppose I want a new identity I can add Mr. X as an Au and have an instant history.

    2. What if you were gonna go BK and you wanted to mess up someones credit you could add them as an AU and your history will follow them.

Seems like there is a lot of potential security lapses on this.

BUT...if I have a "COUSIN" that is also named GEORGE J SMITH and he lives in NY and we are both "AU" on your account...I LIVE IN CO AND YOU LIVE IN WA...BOTH OF US ARE NOT AT ALL RELATED TO YOU...I ALSO WONDER HOW THEY WOULD FIGURE OUT WHO'S REPORT TO PUT IT ON!!!

In my city I am one of 3 with the same name!!!

In CA or NY there has to be 50 or 100 or more with my name???

I didn't even CONFIRM he was my SON...or that he lives at my address!!!

I don't know about the first one cos you wouldn't have a ss# for that new identity, though there are ways for that one also. As far as going BK, the AU could just have themselves removed as an AU so that the history wouldn't follow. The AU is not responsible for the main cardholders debts - would work the other way around though.

I was authorized user from my brother´s Amex accounts. I only gave them my name (No SS# or Date of birth) and they reported the two accounts on my reports as an Authorized users.

Also I added as an authorized users from severals of my accounts to a relative (he doesn´t have SS# because he is not US citizen or resident) and I bet you that the accounts are being reported to his own new report using my address and my employment info. I am helping him because he will move in to the US in a couple of months and wanted to create
    a cr history.

I also just added a relative moving here from overseas as an AU. No request for a ss# was made. The retailer told me they will report her AU status to all 3 CRA's. My suspicion is that a credit report has just been born for her. I hope that the retailer knows what they are talking about.

I don't know what do when the relative lacks a ss# and wants to apply for a secured card. Everyone needs a ss# as far as I know.

thanks Geo. This must be a popular card with immigrants until they get their ss#.
