I have a few seperate questions: Authorized Users I have a quite a few credit cards that had been issued to me via my ex-girlfriend (she gets approved and gets me a card also). Anyhow, we've split and I've asked her to cancel my cards. I just told her to do so today and so one of my questions is will she be able to do so even though we still owe money on them? Secondly, I know closed accounts look bad on the reports, so does anyone think having them removed because I was just an "authorized user" will work? Also, how bad are closed account really? I haven't had much credit history in the past 5 years and having her history attached to my CR helped a bit. Once closed, would it be a good idea to keep some on my CR (assuming I can remove them in the first place) to see that I had previous credit? Capital One I currently have a delinquent account with CO. It's been almost 6 years since I last paid on it, maybe 5 since it went delinquent. As most of you probably already know, they still report it every month. I have disputed many of my negs via the online method with great success (not so much with them) and I am down to just a couple more. Does anyone have tips on dealing with CO?
If you are Authorized User, as opposed to Joint User, you are not legally responsible for repaying, so the CC company should have no problem removing you at her request, even with an existing balance. If the accounts were in collection, you might run into some problems although legally you shouldn't, since some CAs will try to convince you that you are legally responsible. They don't care who they get to pay. You would presumably pay her for your fair share of the debt. Closed accounts don't look bad, per se. But the higher debt to available credit that results depresses your scores. Do you have one or two existing CC accounts in your own name alone? If your scores are passable primarily due to the AU accounts, you might want to make sure you have been approved for your own accounts before you remove them.
Fantastic reply, thanks! That answered pretty much everything I wanted to know regarding those type of accounts. Any idea regarding CO? Has anyone had success disputing such accounts with them?
Cap. One is not going down easy.... what are the circumstances surrounding this account making it derog?
