Today we found out that a relative's bank account got seized because of a judgement rendered (?) on some checks the wife apparently bounced last year. We found this out because they had written us a check that we had not yet cashed...

How does that seizure work? How were they able to open a joint account again after writing bad checks in the first place??

They would go about the normal process of informing them of the bounced checks, letting Treble damages hit and then going for a judgement. The next move is to get a writ (levy) and attach the bank account. You would be amazed at how much information 3rd party companies will give to other creditors. I am constantly shocked. The reason why they were able to get a joint account is because some banks check checksystem and some don't. Credit unions do not check.
