    Hello everyone,
My friend needs help! She is 19 now and has no credit & one outstanding balance
at a bank that was opened when she was 16.

Her boyfriend when she was 17 stole her ATM card and withdrawal money that wasn't
available from her account, the total amount still showing is close to $300 and
she didn't say anything then because she thought it would go away and was embarrassed
    if her parents found out.

Should she dispute this with the bank and explain what happen or has too many
years pass by? Should she call them and offer half? I don't know what to tell
her other than to pay it because she should've said something at the time.

She is trying to open another back account and start the process of buying a car
but she needs to get this off her record.

Need a lot of feed back please.

I would suggest that she pays the debt. I'm sure the bank wouldn't be willing to work with her since she didn't mention anything at the time. They probably would have wanted her to file a police report.

I didn't sound like it was too much.

    Just my 2 cents.

I agree, she should pay it off rather than try to get out of it. After all, she must have given her boyfriend the pin number at one time so it would be hard proving that he stole it, especially three years after the fact.

What an exciting Friday night. :)

I suggest she pay it to clear it up and then she can turn around and sue the exboyfriend (if she can prove he stole it but I doubt it cause he did need a PIN no to take out the money) for the money in small claims court.

You should never give your ATM card to anyone!

Minors can't enter into a binding contract. Was an adult joint on the account? If not, she has no liability.
She needs to inform the bank that she was a minor and to call off the collection dogs and clear her credit report.

    Keep,

Depending on her state she may be able to enter into a contract at 16. Ohio's that way.

    :)

after she clears that situation, where should she start in starting to build her credit she has no accounts in her name except for the unpaid balance of the bank account
