I was just helping my mom today with her credit card situations, getting on board the 0% BT train. She has stellar credit (Dad is an MD - retired) and they have never missed a payment on any card or mortgage or loan etc...ever. I noticed her Bank One card was an anomaly because the account is years old and has a perfect history, yet has 24.99% APR. All her other cards have great limits and low APR's.

After a long explanation by the CSR saying something about an error on a payment made 7 months ago, which posted incorrectly (not my moms fault), and that is what triggerred the high APR. She could do nothing so I spoke to her manager and...anyway, after being transferred to retention and before canceling I tried see what they would do, and they would only drop her to 21.99%!! No lower, not one inch! I was outraged! What a bunch of shmoes. Hell their loss...I knew I could cancel, because before I told her I would try to negotiate, she was gonna ditch this card anyway.

SMALL VICTORY - It felt great to be able to finally cancel a card when they tell you "sorry there is NOTHING further I can do for you". I have always been "helpless" because I need my cards so bad and have never been able to "follow through" with my idle threats to cancel. I told her she could take her 21.99% offer and the Bank One card and shov....needless to say, my mom moved the Bank One balance to her new 0% Citi Plat Select.

Moral of the story - "Stay away from Bank One".
