Can you find out who is trying to have you served before you actually get served?

Hypothetically if you are in the process of being served civil paper by a Sheriff (who hasn't been successful yet), can you go down to the local courthouse and see if there is a suit pending against you?
Is there a certain time period one has from the time of service until the first court appearance? As in ...Serve John Doe, John Doe has to have 30 days warning before the first court date.

Are Complaints a matter of public record. I thought they were.

Thanks for any and all answers!

If the sheriff has tried to serve you (meaning he has left an official notice on your door saying he has a legal procees to serve to you), you may be able to look up any filing of motions on the internet. Just type into a search engine the name of your state and the word courts. If your state has a pretty good website for their court systems, you may be able to look up a case by just using your last name. However, if they already have your address to serve you, you're pretty much up the creek... Look up on the internet the method your state must use to serve legal process, and make sure they have followed that procedure.

maybe, maybe not. Just because the sheriff is serving process to you doesn't mean that it is originating from within your county or even your state. They are simply serving the process from any lawful jurisdiction.

Don't wait to get this. Go find the sheriff and get the papers. Waiting only makes it worse and doesn't get you out of responsibility. The sooner you recieve the process the sooner you can start to defend yourself.
