I was just looking at the web site and wondering if there is any benefit to amex optima platinum over amex blue? Isn't the apr higher and no rewards points and no other special benefits, just curious if I am missing something?

Optima PLATINUM has a long-term BT rate, looks better (in my opinion), and may be easier to get.

With the regular Optima, I think the only advantage is that it's easier to get. It's an entry-level card for people who carry balances.

if I already have a blue would I qualify for an optima platinum? I agree that it looks much nicer and much more professional, also is BVG still available on this card?

I think I want it just for the prestige of having an amex platinum card :) maybe...

I've read in posts about AmEx retention that they will reduce an Optima Platinum rate almost as low as a Blue rate. That's what makes a lot of people happy.

Lowest Blue rate = 7.99 fixed
    Lowest Optima rate = Prime+3.99

I don't think Optima offers any rewards.

The card to get for prestige is the AmEx Platinum *charge* card, not the Platinum Optima. The charge card has a $300 annual fee and all charges must be paid in full monthly.
