Holy cow, I went to the Nextel shop to upgrade my phone, and was told that the FCC has mandated that all new cell phones, starting now, but official on Jan 1,2004 must have a built-in GPS!

Is this for our benefit or is it a huge invasion of privacy?!

Its for E-911 (enhanced 911), which was mandated by the FCC. This is so that wireless callers can transmit their location within 50 meters in case of emergency.

I C. I was wondering what it was for. I don't feel so paranoid anymore. Well, still a little ;)

Your logic is flawed. You were on the right track earlier. There is always a popular, soothing, relevant, superficial reason.

It's all bullshit---just like auto insurance. If this wasn't mandated, there would be far fewer accidents.

Why would there be fewer accidents if insurance wasn't required???????

I believe auto insurance is a good thing.

GPS can be turned off in newer cell phone.

    1. If I crash my car, I'm not out 40K.
    2. If you crash into my car, I'm not out 40K.
    3. If I crash into your car, you won't be taking my house.

To me car insurance is like health insurance. It sux making out the check, but when you use it, you are glad you have it.
