My credit report shows bankruptcy filed in 2/04 although it was actually not discharged until 6/04, but this is not noted on my credit report. Are creditors going by the 2/04 date on my CR when determining if I have been discharged from BK at least 6 months. I am asking because I recently went on vacation and had such a hard time with trying to rent a car with a debit card. I am wanting to apply for a credit card (never have had one before) and make things easier on myself for the next time we go out of town. You don't know how much crap I had to go through to get a rental with no cc.
You can use a prepaid card but certain car rental companies like Hertz and Avis will refuse them. Even though it has the MC or Visa logo, their system has a way to check the number and reject it. They are set up to only accept major bank credit cards. I know from personal use that Budget will accept prepaid cards that have the MC or Visa hologram. Maybe if you call and ask about your debit card they might take it. In any event for car rentals especially call first and see what they accept. I learned this the hard way in Las Vegas. Hertz and Avis refused my prepaid card. I called Budget who said they would accept it...but I waited in line 2 hours because they were so busy. The good part is that their prices are cheaper and you still get to choose a late model car. Be nice and they will always upgrade you. If there is a CVS drug store chain in your area you can get a prepaid card from there. The applications are at the cash register. You pay the fee then call a 1-800 number to activate it and get the credit card number immediately. For an extra charge of about $29.95 you can have a card sent via Fedex within 48 hours. It is good for one year and they send another before the expiration date. This card is better than the one you can purchase from Hess gas stations. They will gag you for a $25 overcharge if an attempt to charge is made and you don't have enough funds on the card. The one from CVS will just reject the charge but not make you pay $25. There is a monthly fee of $4.95 charged to the card each month and a reload fee of $4.95 rach time you load funds to the card. Yes it is pricey but the card works with no problems whatsoever. Good luck.
Yeah, on mine only EQ shows the discharge date in addition to the File date, but it's a notation next to the Court Reference#. "Date filed" is one of the standard fields. I'd figure they're looking more at FICO then 6 months past discharge. I'm guessing if they were reviewing manually that it's very common for them to see the Date Filed, and they can guess at the Discharge Date.
