I recently went through BK, and you have to take a credit counseling - and a debt management course - which have to be completed within 6 months prior to the filing. If you are filing through a lawyer, don't worry about it, they should have part of the fees that you pay cover the course. Mine were both online - requiring a call to a 1800 number at the end to verify that I was actually the person who completed it.

Assuming that your car isn't behind on the payments, you can work to keep it. That will also depend partially on if it is a chapter 7 or 13.

If you are behind on payments on the car, you might have to come up with the money to bring it current in order to keep it. I would suggest taking a long hard look at if the car is worth keeping based on the amount you would have to come up with to keep it, and how much longer you will have to pay on it.
