What about RadioShack? Everytime I buy something, and it doesn't matter whether it's by credit card or cash, they want all my info...name, address, phone #. I tell them they don't need that and they push. I always push back and get the "well, the computer won't take the purchase unless I at least get your zip code". Eventually they 'miraculously" get it to take but I'm sick of the drill.

I don't opt-out of everything and get my name off the DMA just to have RadioShack sell my info!

They have a "FLYER" customer list...if you buy more than 2 or 3 times in a given time frame...they will mail you a sales flyer...

you all do realize that they ask for your i.d. for your protection. Anyone can forge a signature, but not everyone looks like you!!

    just my 2 cents

How often does someone really look at the picture on an ID? All they look at is the name; meaning--if someone stole your wallet, they would have your ID and your cards, and as long as it's not real obvious (they are the same sex/race.) I'm sure they'll pass. Whenver I've been asked for ID, the cashier NEVER looks at the picture to compare to my face.

Just tell them you KNOW that they are collecting the "required" information so that they can hound you with unsolicited marketing and also sell your contact info as well (YES, it's true!) And you will report them to the Federal Trade Commission if they persists. A Zip Code is okay, as many companies just want to know where their business is coming from.

    Just had to add this.....

I was at the gas station the other day getting my morning cup of coffee, like every other day.... and I paid with my brand new Visa Check Card. I always sign my cards the moment I open the envelope, so I know it was signed. The clerk asked me for my Driver's License. I said...."Why? The card is signed." (Remember, it's a cup of coffee at a gas station not a new computer, TV and DVD player at Comp USA) He said, I need to see your ID. I reiterated that the card is signed and I didn't have to present ID to make my purchase. That was that.

THEN...I'm at Office Max getting a Cheapo digital camera to take pictures for Ebay, and they want DL's for all Check and CC purchases. My Visa Check Card pops out again, and she asks for my ID. Again, the same gas station conversation...She states it's to protect against fraud. This is where it gets difficult. My Visa Check Card is in my married name, and my DL is still in my maiden name. Then she wants my marriage certificate. So, here I am, at the register, with my entire life out on the counter for a $40 digital camera.

Why is it so difficult to make a credit card purchase these days?!?!?!?

To expedite purchasing, mechants are not expected to take the time to obtain identification from
customers who pay by credit card. Merchants are not required to obtain phone numbers or other
personal information from customers because, if they correctly process their bank card
transactions (i.e. obtain an authorization number and make sure signatures match), they are
    guaranteed to receive payment.

If there is a problem with a transaction--such as a cardholder exceeding his credit limit--the
card-issuing bank absorbs the cost. The merchant gets paid anyway, so there is no need for him
    to contact the cardholder.

YOUR NOT HARMING A STORE BY REFUSING TO PROVIDE YOUR PHONE NUMBER,
    ADDRESS OR DRIVER'S LICENSE NUMBER.

    WORTH REPEATING...

THEY ARE IN SERIOUS VIOLATION, I actually filed complaints against WALMART, during the holidays, guess how quick the "ID REQUIRED FOR ALL CREDIT CARDS" sign got taken down!

I got $100.00 in gift cards from WAL MART to win back my business!

I just had a really nasty experience in a store with showing id - turned into a shouting match between my husband and the manager. The manager still gave us a hard time when my husband showed his licence to make a purchase.

So I'm going to contact my cc company and file a complaint with them... but I also want to fax the smart ass manager who embarassed me and show him that he is wrong about making us show ID - for no reason. I called VISA on my cell phone just to verify I wasn't wrong in telling the manager that he can't ask for ID and they verified this, so I know I'm right - but I just need proof in writing as soon as possible.

I've been searching for this information in black and white from VISA but can't find it.. anyone have a link to it??

    I'd appreciate it.

    Ozzy.

I would llike to have it in black and white too. I am getting so sick of everyone wanting my ID when I use my visa check card. Hello? Haven't they seen the Kevin Bacon commercial where he is running around gathering people so he can write a check? They advertise to use your check card so that you DON'T have to show ID. I would love to have a print out of that area of the merchant agreement to show instead of my ID. LOL.

...MORE...if you use a PIN #...THE SALE IS FINAL...WHY WOULD ANYBODY ASK FOR ID???
The PIN # is the "ID"!!!

Hi George.. I saw your post but when I write to the store, I want to say 'according to the Visa website...." or someting along those lines.. I found several websites that explain the same thing - but just can't find it from the 'horse's mouth' so to speak.........

I'm probably being too picky, but if I'm gonna bust this rude manager, I wanna bust him with the proper ammunition. He was just not nice at all.

If you can locate please share I have a friend who owns a store and we argue this scenario.

He claims it's his store and he has a right to ID anyone.

I have seen the link posted somewhere can not remember where.

May have to call Visa and ask.

He has a "RIGHT" to ask for ID...but YOU have a "RIGHT" to refuse to show ID (on a signed card)...(or PIN# card)...if he doesn't need the money from the SALE...FINE!!!

That's what they did with my hubby - signed card, and still wanted ID. Would not accept the card without him showing ID. It's not like we were buying a car or something... just an $80 purchase...

If I find the link I will certainly post it - and if anyone beats me to it, I'll be really grateful! =-)

I just used my MasterCard at Walmart last night. I swiped it through the machine. She snapped that she needs my card and my I.D. I gave them both to her and she held them up to the light for a good 40 seconds as if comparing signatures. I asked if there was a problem and she said no, that they HAVE to check ID and make sure the sigs match. "It's for YOUR protection" she said.
What a witch!!!!!! I would love to report them and CC a copy to the manager "FOR HIS PROTECTION".
