yes, truly don't believe it to be mine. I have no recollection of it - so I will be disputing that next.

TU sent me an amended CR, this one with more info than the one I got online. I now know:

    Opened: 1997/09
    Closed: 2000/07
    Updated: 2004/05

It does give a status of 'purchased by another lender'. Not sure if I can work with that at all, don't think so.

CRRR will be going out tomorrow disputing this one. Then things will be looking quite better...

Is there a way to prevent them from selling it?

Is the account fraudulently in your name, or is it actually an account of another persion? Why did they attempt to collect from you?

You don't have to depend on your memory to be certain you did not have an account. Your check register, from say 1999 to 2000, should be sufficient to determine all accounts you were paying on during the time before this account was closed. If those match up to all other accounts you see on your credit reports, and there were no checks to this unknown account, then you were not actively paying this account. The date and amount of the last payment made on the account would make this check simpler, and also establish any SOL. Even if its not your account, if you know its past SOL, you can negotiate from a stronger position if your opponent knows they won't win if they sue, and can't bluff you.

1*Both requests were denied with '<major CA> is in the collection business, not research business .
2* if we have to go to the trouble of researching it we will just as soon take you to court and get the full amount vs a 60% settlement"
3*I assumed asking/waiting for verification verbally was good enough. I guess not, given that they put it on my CR.
4* he said I was playing games and that he would just sue me since I was toying with him by troubling him.3) I beleive threatening suit and not suing is a violation.
5*The new collection TL he's got in my TU has a starting date of 2 months ago, so I guess that TL has the ability to stay in my CR for 7 years if not checked.
6*Contact to date has only been via phone, never was a mini-miranda mailed to me.
7*As for this smelling fishy, yes, I told him that this smells of a scam and that I need more info than his word. His reply was, 'check out your TU, you'll see the TL reference on there'. I told him anyone can get my CR and try to claim a settlement on a debt. His reply was 'see you in court' and he hung up.

1*This is a good way for them to get out of the collection business and into the paying for violations business. Violation 1 =$1000.00
Just send the VL CRRR. I told you this 5/14--Have you done it yet ? ? ?
2*Did they also tell you if there research results in no validation they can't take you to court and win?
3*That's Y you do it all in writing U need the paper trail.
Here is what happens when you ask for validation verbally. You got no proof you ever requested it so the CA waits out the 30 days then slaps it on your reports
4* You said this on 5/19 have they sued you yet if not as you said here ___>3) I believe threatening suit and not suing is a violation. $1000
5*Appears like a $1000 re aging violation TO ME.
    6*Another $1000
7*His reply was 'see you in court' and he hung up: I000 bucks if you haven't met him there yet.
