I had a CA place a collection account on all 3 of my bureaus in April of 2003 and have copies of these 3 reports. I pulled up all 3 reports today, and all have the 'Date Assigned/ Date Opened' changed from April 2003 to December 2003 (eight months later). Now this is hurting my score even worse, as it shows as extremely recent. Can they do this? What is my recourse?
-Send a dispute to the reporting agencies disputing the "dates" of the acount, and provide what documentation you have -IF the collection agency re-lists the account with the incorrect dates, AND YOU HAVE EVIDENCE IT IS WRONG, the collection agency AND the credit reporting agency can be in violation of FCRA 623 (b) for failing to conduct an "adequate investiation" http://www.ftc.gov/os/statutes/fcra.htm#623
