CA didn't update paid debt: remove?

I am trying to clean up the few negative account histories I have. I have been reading this board and creditboards.com and have learned so much already. Unfortunately I paid an account with a CA before knowing about the PFD. I realize there are suggestions on the sites for having this done via goodwill and nutcase letters but there is also mention of dispute based on different incorrect information.

My credit reports show I have an account with Amsher Collection Service as of August 2004 with a balance of $178. Remarks/Payment Status say "Seriously past due date/assigned to attorney, collection agency, or credit grantor's internal collection department."

I also now realize that the phone is not the way to go however I did call them in January to bring this up - and they verified if was paid early September 2004 without me actually asking. They said they would send the correct information to the CRA and were not sure why it was not updated.

What is the best way to go about having this removed from my reports all together? I have paid the debt but cannot have the collection agency on my report as I'm still in need of loans for grad school but have no one to cosign. Have been rejected recently and the collection agency was given as the problem, not the score. I don't want them to write back stating the same as they did on the phone.

Since reading these boards I have now also sent a PFD for an acct. shown as Charge-Off (by the OC not CA). I wish I had known about this site though because I started to contest many of the withdrawals from the acct. before it was sent to a CA. I can prove many times over that I never left NY to use an ATM or to shop(?) at some other ritzy place at the time the debits were made. But I got frustrated with all the demands and sending information of non-disputed items that I then did nothing when they seemingly stopped their investigation and gave it to a CA. Now I know where to look, but hopefully I won't need to... ever (or for a long while).

I am also going to send one for a CC that was once 30 days past due (though I don't remember that and it would have happened long before I cancelled the acct.), I figured a Goodwill letter asking the negative info be removed would be best since the account has been closed a while now?

Is there any possibility of being able to be approved for a loan in time for grad school with all of this? Ex score is in low 600's right now. Already 56k in undergrad debt (grad this spring).

Thank you so much in advance.
