I had an old collection item that I sent a Certified return receipt letter to the collection agency requesting they send proof. I send this letter twice to them the second time asking that if they did not show acceptable proof that I am requesting they remove the item CRA files. They did not respond but had the original creditor, a dentist office, send me a copy of a stmt showing the amount owing. I never signed anything that I was financially responsible, although my wife may have. What should I do next??

Send them the Estoppel letter. Include something about the requirements for "proper" validation per the FTC opinion letters (see the FAQ on what constitutes proper validation). State that they did not provide adequate proof...demand they remove the listing or you will file a lawsuit for violations of the FDCPA for each and every failed validation, as well as erroneous disputes that they verified, (you did dispute the listing with the CRA didn't you?) and damages against your obtaining credit since the listing has been reported.

Next step after that would be filing suit.

Anything the dentists office sent as and for validation is invalid. When you request validation from a ca, they must obtain the proof from the oc, then the ca themselves must send it to you. Having the dentist send it for the ca doesn't work.
