CA phone calls - no collection letter

I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this. We have been getting telephone calls on our voice mail which sound like collection calls ("this is an important, personal matter. Please call so and so, etc."). Caller id shows "Unavailable, but lists a 800 number which is associated with a CA firm. These calls do not state who they are for. We have had them every three or four days for the past month, yet there has not been any correspondence from the CA.

The question is this - is this a new tactic to get around the verification requirement in FDCPA? If they don't send you a collection letter so you can ask for verification and stop the clock, are they hoping that at some point you will pick up the phone to talk to them? I am asking this because we faced identical circumstances twice before from different collectors. The phone messages continued for about a month, then stopped.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. By the way, we never answer our phone unless we know who the caller is. Voice mail handles everyone else.

They may not even know if they have the right party. Has anything shown up on your reports? Do you have some old charged off account making the rounds of the CAs?

There are two old charge offs which have been disputed, to no avail. Nothing new on credit reports, including CR pulls.
