Has anyone ever heard of IMBS? This is a collection agency in Florida that is trying to collect on a medical debt that I have. My HMO and I are in dispute over a bill which they have said they will not pay. The thing about this is that they have given me an option to appeal the decision. I did this. About a week later, I get a letter from IMBS, trying to collect on the debt.

Now, I try to be nice and call them up and explain the situation. That my HMO and I are in the process of a 30 day appeal. They don't care, they claim that the HMO never informed them, they want their money, blah, blah, blah.

So I hang up and call my HMO. They tell me they will call the CA and inform them to not try to collect on this until their decision is final. Does that work? Nope.

I get two more letters and I call IMBS two more times. Now they are threatening to place this on my CR. IMBS tells me to go ahead and pay the bill, then get your money back from the HMO. Yeah, right. I tell them that until the HMO decides they are not going to pay on the claim, you are not getting a dime.

I really want to hammer both of them, the HMO and the CA. What to do?

You need to send them a validation letter NOW. Once they receive it, they must cease collection activity until they do provide the proof. This includes reporting to the bureaus.

Thanks LKH. Will put it in the mail first thing Monday morning. Would a cease and desist letter to be appropriate as well?

C & D won't stop them from reporting it. Validation is the way to go.
