This is the 1st time a CA wants to verify my identity. They say they have the account info as open with them for "some time, without any notification of dispute. To investigate, we rqst a copy of your driver's license and SS card for comparison purposes." My experience in reading this site is that this is a stall tactic. I don't feel comfortable sending this info, but what really would it prove? I can fake a DL and SS card if I wanted to, but why would I bother for a collection account? Any other suggestions on what I can do to get this validation going???? It seems that they won't do anything w/o this personal info. What's worse is that I do not know what this account was. I cannot remember it for anything!
DO NOT REPLY TO THEIR LETTER. IT WILL GIVE THEM MORE TIME AND THAT IS WHAT THEY WANT YOU TO DO. THEY HAVE YOUR DISPUTE AND IF THEY HAVE AN ACCOUNT WITH YOUR NAME IT IS UP TO THEM TO PROVE IT NOT YOU. Hope this helps and yes I meant to put all caps
Tony. You do need to respond. Make a cover letter and have it notarized at your bank. That means they verify your id. Include copies of your orignal dispute, and a copy of FTC V. PCM. Tell em since you're concerned about all this IDTheft you're not comfy sending all that info. Send then whatever you know they already have.
They probably don't have enough identifying info to get the account onto a CRA's system, and they're hoping you'll give it to them. They can validate to you or not. If they don't validate, you don't pay. But they're required to show cards, not you. And if you don't remember the account, chances are they've locked onto the wrong TonyD.
They didn't need your Social Security Card or Drivers License to screw up your credit files. Why should they need anything else to prove to you that you owe them money?
I think I am gonna leave this sucker alone. I just figured out something: This TL was showing on my TU about 2.5 wks ago, which is y I disputed it. As I look back it was also on my EX in Jul. It is NOT showing on ANY CR as of today, and PG either. According to the last TU report it was on, the TL was not sked to fall off on it's own until Dec 04. Maybe I should consider myself lucky!
Send your val letter, and the CA response, to the CRA. Demand deletion because the CA has proved it can't validate. Do not respond to the CA - after 30 days for val request, send the CA an estoppel letter saying they failed to val within 30 days. ANYTHING other than legal val = nonvalidation.
So it showed up at one point and it's gone now? On one hand, problem solved. On another, there's always the possibility that it will "reappear". Don't send them copies of stuff they didn't need to report it in the first place! I guess you'll have to leave it alone for a while, see if it appears on your reports again, and then repost. Sounds like there are some good strategies on this thread.
Did you not hear Tony tell us it's not showing now? Even if it were, I'm not so sure this would have been the most effective approach. Give this one a little time Tony. Sit tight. .
