don't know if this is credit related (definitely money related!) but looking for opinions...i currently pay about $100 per month for cable and internet. i'm thinking of switching to satelite ($30 per month) and dial-up internet ($19 per month) to save money. as much as i will miss my fast cable internet connection and lose the picture on my tv occasionally i think it may be worth it financially. savings of $50per month.

any good/bad experiences to share? opinions wanted!

I have neither. I canceled my cable many years ago, when my now ex-husband left. I'm too far out to get broadcast, and the $50 or so I was paying for cable was needed elsewhere to pay bills.

Guess what--I don't miss TV and probably will never get cable/satellite again. I have friends tape something once in a while, and I buy DVDs of TV shows I want to see. The freedom is great! I listen to the radio while I do other things. I spend a lot of time volunteering, and some time at my computer. My current husband was a little dismayed at first, but he now also realizes how much more time we have for other things.

Right now I have dial up, but I'm thinking of getting a deal that Verizon has here--DSL plus unlimited local and long distance telephone for $79 a month. I could even get rid of my second phone line!

    Hedwig -

Thanks for the response! The problem i have is that i am semi-country and i can't get reception for the local channels - i'm jealous of those that do! i should add that my cable is just basic - no movie channels for $50 per month and my internet is $50.

i wish i had the dsl option! its either cable internet or dial-up (i won't get a second line though)...

there is a deal through my phone company (just found out) where if i have my regular phone service, internet and satelite i would pay about $75 per month for all (compared to $135 seperate) and i can add a cell phone with a great plan for $30 more (compared to the $80 i am paying now).

I also don't get reception for local channels. That's what I mean by broadcast TV. So I don't get any TV at all and I really have gotten so I don't miss it at all.

The reason I think I'll jump on this Verizon deal is that I currently have 2 phones lines, total about $50. I have a time-limited internet account (why I'm not here all the time) for about $10 a month, and my long distance runs anywhere from $10-20 a month. So I'm not paying much to go to high speed, and we could make long distance from home instead of my cell phone. Right now the cell doesn't work well in the house, and I really only have lots of minutes on the weekend.

I need to change my family room/computer room around a little and my husband wants to get a new computer, then I think I'll go for their $79 deal.

i admit it! i'm pathetic! i cant go without tv or my computer (seems to be my only outlet in my depressing life lately). i don't have hedwigs willpower!

again - i know this doesn't pertain to credit, but i would still like opinions on which is the better product for its cost.

$20.00 a month for dial up? That sounds expensive, why not go with local internet providers or something like Netzero for 9.95 per month?

As long as you have a clear view of the South Western sky you can install a satellite dish.

My GF has one and it works fine. Her neighbor has one also, but there are trees that block the satellite's "view" of the sky and they lose reception often.

Also, during really heavy snow or rain the picture can "pixelate" (blocks) but it is usually temporary.

The reason she switched from cable to satellite is the same you are thinking of...cable bill was up to
    70$ a month now she pays 33$!

the reason i'm thinking of going through my phone company is for the discount on the dish. i've also been with the company for many years - so i kinda trust them.

good idea though - i will check into it!

i'm thinking i'll have to trim some trees. i hadn't thought of that though - that might be a problem because my southwest neighbor has a ton of trees.

do you think they will come out and do an assessment of whether or not it will work???

I don't know that I ever had "will power." My ex-husband had the TV on all the time, and it was initially a rebellion. Plus, I really couldn't afford it. The first month or so was bad, but pretty soon I didn't miss it at all. Of course, I was at the 'puter most of the time. Now that I've been without if for more than 10 years, it's all very liberating.

We as a family have gone for a few months at a time without cable or satellite, we are right now living with friends and have only one tv with a receiver on it downstairs, so the upstairs is vcr only. IF the girls decide to watch tv they are watching video's.
I told them what when we move in to our place, whenever that might be, that it will probably be christmas or so before we get satellite or cable hooked up, just so we can get used to the bills we will have at the new place. Unless the cable company has some outstanding offer for us we can't live without.
Of course with all the unpacking, and putting stuff away, and school starting, and homework, swimming and internet and driving 2 times a week, 100 miles each way to baton practice, who has time for tv?

Sure hope we get local channels up there, can't miss ER.

Go with the satellite, (DirecTv is best) then depending on where you live get DSL through the phone company, it works GREAT!

i like satellite, just because the cable company sucks so bad..service sucks, the menu layout and lag on the cable reciever sucks..and the prices arent any better than satellite.

so go with satellite :) just watch out ..if it storms alot you lose signal constantly..at least in my area. a little rainstorm will take my wittle satellite system out easily.
