Hi all... I thought a separate thread on this subject alone might help me. If a consumer has a charge-off showing with CreditorA and then CreditorB purchases that debt, can CreditorB report that same debt with a different account number/creditor name or must they update the original debt on the report?
I have had the same issue with Monkey Wards and Midland Credit Management. The same account is showing up twice on my credit report. I have asked the same question before and was told that it is okay for that to happen. I have disputed that in the past and was successful in removing the account only to have it reappear later. dan in dallas
NO, they cannot report an account twice! Here's what I suggest you do. Look carefully at each entry in question to see if one of them has a different account number. Sometimes your creditor will assign your account a new account number, for whatever reason, and then the account goes on your report twice...once under each account number. All you have to do is write the CRA and tell them the accounts are the same and to update your report. Even if they both still show the same account number, you can request that the account be listed only once. Do it. It works.
Dan: The CRA has to notify you 5 days in advance of re-insertion. If they didn't you have them on a violation. If you have a credit report showing they deleted, mail a copy to them quoting the FCRA. That should take care of that problem. Bobbi
