Last month I disputed some collections and some negative items on my report and today I received an updated report. One of the colletion items was removed and also one of the negatives. The problem I have is they removed a LOT of my positives. CAN THEY DO THAT? I thought positive accounts were to remain for 10 yrs. Is it 10 years from date opened or date of last activity? Either way...here are some of them: Date Opened Date of Last Activity 09/1999 03/2002 09/2000 08/2001 Can I .... and should I ask that they be put back? I guess my MAIN concern is does this hurt my score....they removed 8 positives...all of which should remain if it's 10 yrs from date of last activity. Thanks...
"I guess my MAIN concern is does this hurt my score" Yes. In fact, you should pull your FICO score to see how much it hurts it. Wiping out your older account history skews your apparent length of credit activity on top of the skewing of your score from removal of positive accounts. It magnifies the effect of having any negative items. It also magnifies the negative effect of high utilization if your positive credit history is short. Creditors are more willing to extend credit that you use to a higher percentage when you have a longer positive history, and FICO reflects that. "Is it 10 years from date opened or date of last activity? " Date of last activity. Were the removed accounts closed? One reason to keep even some little used accounts open is to ensure that their long positive history remains.
I talked to them this morning. They are putting them back and sending an updated copy of my report.....should get it by Tues. of next week. Thanks for your help.
