    Guys,

I've been thinking about filing a chap 7.

I called several Lawyers and they are asking 200.00 for court fee and 700.00 - 1000.00 for lawyer fees.

I was wondering if anyone has filed themselves.
What do I need and where can I get it?

I searched the net and got 100's of hits on Do-it- Yourself kits. I suspect they are selling free information.

    Thanks in advance

    Steve

I think you should check the yellow pages, or a local paper's classified ads. I've seen ads on tv and papers for less than that. Once when I explored that option (2 years ago) I was quoted about $600. In my situation, I'm glad that I did not do it (of course, I almost tripled my income so that helped me out).

I filed without an attorney in 1996. I bought a bankruptcy kit and called the court for my district for filing instructions. If I had a question about certain debts, I would use the free consultations offered by most lawyers--without letting them know I had planned to do it myself! The whole affair only cost me the $175 filing fee, and I paid that in installments.

While my BK was pretty straightforward--no assets, no income--I wouldn't recommend filing by yourself if you have complicated finances. Actually, unless you are in danger of losing your home or facing garnishment, I wouldn't file CH 7 at all. Ten years is a long time to wait to get decent credit. Have you considered Ch 13 instead?
