Can I fix old bill on credit report

I just pulled my credit report and found that I have an old bill (Aug 1998) that was added to my credit report Apr 2002. I wasn't aware of this bill and I'd like to take care of it. However, the credit report I purchased online only has a reference code # for the creditor, no address or phone.

I know who the original creditor was, but if it's in collections and I pay them - how will I get it off my record? Also will this stay on my record for 7 years beginning 2002?

    TIA

I'm not sure what to do about the address (call the CRA maybe?) but I do know that if you are serious about paying it you can always discuss a deletion of the account (or negative tradeline) with whomever now owns the debt. I can't promise they'll agree to it but it's worth a shot.

Or....you could always start with validation.

It should only stay on for 7 years after _________ (insert "DOLA", "D.O. first delinquency", etc.) As far as I know, this hasn't been determined yet. But I highly doubt it'll be from 2002 if the bill is from 1998.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will phone the CRA.

When I call the creditor, do I just ask for deletion with full payment? Is this best requested by formal letter? (Is this covered in a post already online? Newbie...)

Edited to say: I'll look up validation and see what that is all about.

It is a phone bill that I didn't have shut off when I moved out (I left responsibility for paying the bill in someone else's hands). So bottom line, I should have known better - but it is my responsibility.

Re: Can I fix old bill on credit re

If SOL goes by the current state I live in it's 6 yrs. So I'm shy by a bit.

This bill is with a CA now. I called experian and got the contact info they had - but all they had was a name and phone number. Will try to match that online with an address.

Thank you for the links. I'm off to read them now (though I should be snoozing!!).

You need to send the CA the validation letter
