I saw Ender was asking about how to OPTOUT of credit card offers. Will your score increase by calling 1 888 5 OPTOUT? My credit reports are littered with soft inquiries from cell phone companies etc. I am a '97 BK so my credit is being rebuilt but I won't receive unsolicited prime offers for 5 years. I have 6 credit cards and a new car loan, so I am doing fine under the circumstances. Also, I am thinking about changing jobs and it might help me avoid an unwanted credit inquiry related to employment.
I dont know whether it does or not, but I am willing to take the chance.... I just called and opted out because even when I do get the offers, I dont take advantage of them. And I could sure use a lot less junk mail at either rate.
actually, TU admits promo inquiries affect score. I'm not actually looking at a report right now... no I'll paraphrase they divide inquiries into 3 sections for you: 1. Inquiries (hard) where you've applied for credit... these inquiries are seen by others and affect your score 2. Inquiries (promo)... these inquiries are not seen by others (NO MENTION OF SCORE!!!!!) 3. Inquiries (totally soft) these inquiries are not seen by others and do not affect your score TU is the only one to break down inquiries into 3 sections, the others just do hard and soft. If they omit "score" in the section section, there's a reason. The other bureaus only talk about who "SEES" your inquiries... By the way, the fcra requires that promos be for "FIRM OFFERS OF CREDIT" so I'd say if you don't get the credit (can't qualify) then the promo inquiry should either be wiped or it's an impermissible pull and the creditor can get sued by you, fined by the ftc and pay the 2500 fine to the bureau they pulled... but of course nobody will ever push this one.
I opted out last November, and I am still getting PRM inquiries on all 3 reports. Disputing them now. But out in the open, not via the website trick. I want to force the issue if they continue to allow them. They think they can do as they please.
Thanks for the answers. My wife and I are both going to OPTOUT on Monday. We'll OPT back in 5 years from now when the BK drops off. Unless we somehow manage to get rid of it early.
Breeze, I OPTED OUT last June. EX and TU haven't allowed any PRM's but EQ has allowed plenty with the most recent ones last week. I keep meaning to address this with them and find out who regulates this protection to file a complaint. Do you know what agency that might be?
