Can I stop a payment to a collection agency?

My friend just paid an agency for a debt that is likely hers. It was a few years old and they made her feel great settling the debt for a 40% discount, but would report it to the credit reports as paid in full. The agency is MCM.

Obviously, the goal is to get the listing off the CR and this is going to make that difficult. She made the payment with a credit card, so we are looking for some good options here.

We tried, but they will not remove the listing. Company policy. I think we could stop the payment or dispute it perhaps.

One thing that is interesting is that I spoke to two agents and one manager on her behalf. I said I was her husband and they discussed all details of the account and would have let me stop the payment. The last guy even told me he could not discuss the account with her SS# - company policy. He went on to discuss all levels of detail. After I found myself getting nowhere, I mentioned that he violated his security policy and he got very nervous [ the calls are recorded ]. He got squirelly and got off the phone. I called him back. Told him I thought he was a nice guy, but from his behavior I had a feeling he violated his company policy and was gonna get in trouble. I asked to speak to his manager but was put on hold forever and they seem to be closed now!

Any thoughts on how to move forward? She REALLY feels strongly about stopping the collection letters and is willing to take the 7 year hit. Do you think there is any way to leverage them giving that they are so lax discussing accounts?

    Next steps?

    Two mistakes you made
    1.paid with a credit card.
2.Paid before you reached a pfd.
3.You can have your cc company call back the payment.
