I'm new here and have been reading the board for a few months now. (BTW everyone is great!) I've begun the journey to clean up my credit file with the goal of buying a home in a few years. My credit problems in the past have included adefaulted student loan, state tax liens, and one CC accout with DOLA in 1993. I have basically "judgement proofed" myself over the years and pay cash for most things, so I'm not sure what information is in my reports now. Another problem is a family member (now deceased) with the same name (except Middle Name) The student loan has been rehabilitated and is current. I have received satisfactions on tax liens for some, but not all, and I'm not worried about a NCO collection attempt on the 1993 debt (you guys have taught me how to deal with them!) (sorry for all the typing, but I want to give you the backround) My problem is that I'm trying to use the on-line "get your credit report now" services (PS: also tried the WK website) to get copies of my 3 reports so that I can start analysing and cleaning them up. I fill out everything completely and accurately, but get the message that my identity cannot be verified, and I can't view anything on-line. What should be my next step? Use one of the letters posted on creditnet to send a request by mail to the CRA's? Call them and ask for a free copy since I suspect there might be some kind of identity theft if they can't verify my identity when I'm giving them current, accurate information? any ideas? Thanks!
Sounds like you are going to have to call and order. It may be that your family member is mixed with you, creating addresses, etc., making it hard to verify. I think I would rather pay the $8-10 bucks then mention identity theft. I have heard that once you get a fraud alert on your file, it makes your disputes much more difficult to handle.
