Does anyone know how long a bad credit rating can affect employment prospects? I realize people are paranoid these days about hiring someone with potential to defraud them in some way, but how can a person pay their debts without an income? Everyone, even fast food establishments check credit. Whenever the employer says 'background check' I know I probably won't get hired. Add to that the fact I'm over 50 now and age discrimination is alive and well. I realize the mistakes I've made, but I cannot pay down debt without income. I suppose certain things on a credit report age eventually, but things that aren't late as yet will be without a means to pay which drags this out further. People are quick to say 'get a job' but it's becoming almost impossible. Any suggestions?
There are a lot of jobs out there that don't check. Plus you can explain your situation if they do. I've had two jobs that checked my credit history after I had a bankruptcy. Home Depot and Byrne Dairy hired me. Also NYS government does not do credit checks for a majority of jobs. Keep looking and you'll find something.
Or, you can to try and improve your credit by reading these boards while attempting to find a job. Kill two birds with one stone.
