I finally got the great Visa Platinum from Cap One today and immediately called to NOT ACTIVATE the card.

I pushed the "cancel card option" where it asked me if I was cancelling because of annual fee or interest rate....If for any other reason, like credit limit, hold on...

I talked to a nice rep, but here was her great logic...READY?

She asked me about other cards - and I reeled off $10K, $8K, $25LOC....
THEN, she said it might be smart if I carried this low limit Visa - if my wallet got stolen, they could only tap me for a small amt - $500...

I asked her what was different between carrying a $10K card and a $500 card - if it was stolen, I wasn't liable anyway.

She then told me she would be "nervous" carrying those high limit cards - in case of theft. I told her I hoped I would not get ripped off - but if it happened, I was certainly protected by VISA and MC!

Her last weak attempt was - "You will give up those PLATINUM benefits" I told her the WORLD and SIGNATURE and AMEX covered me on the PLATINUM benefits LOL!

Nope, she never once offered to raise me a dime - nor did I care.

I wished her a Merry Christmas and said goodby.

    That was it Cap One!

    Re: Closing the account

I probably sound like a broken record, but do yourself the favor and send a written letter via Certified Mail Return Receipt requested stating that you did not open up the account.

I have mixed feelings about Capital One, on one hand they are probably the best sub-prime credit card issuer, on the other hand it appears that they refuse to accomidate the formerly sub-prime who end up - ( with much regret! ) - giving up on Capital One.

Wow....I am so far behind. Yes it's me! Just wanted to say hi.

Platinum benifits by AMEX huh? Well, let me tell you how AMEX screwed my travel plans to Orlando recently.

    1. The never ticketed my tickets - Which was a good thing because they ended up being $40 cheaper. I didn't find this out until I was AT SFO trying to check my luggage. Imagine that....um.....excuse me but you have no tickets! I was steaming after being at the ticket counter for over an hour on HOLD w/ AMEX Travel. Not to mention they ended up booking me a flight to DFW and back to SFO TWICE (instead of SFO to DFW to Orlando).

    2. They screwed me at the rental car place. AMEX Platinum travel reserved me a $11/day economy car (aka a 2 door Geo Metro) that didn't exist according to Payless car rentals. Long story short I had to have Enterprise come get me (after blowing my temper on the phone with AMEX)

    3. If you saw the hotel that they booked for me, you would of cried. Luckily I didn't because it was 30 minuted AWAY from where I needed to be (at Disney World). I heard that it was a place that also charged by the hour! Fortunately I ended up staying with some people that rented a house for the week (we were there to watch our Son's play football).

I'm beginning to wonder. I've spoke w/ Airline people and rental car people and they say AMEX Platinum travel is the worst! I know it's a pretty card and all but DANG!

Hope all is well. I see things are different on here than before.

Hey Dogman...and you probably got three hards on the 3 Cr bureaus, didn´t you?. I also received a 500 toy card when applied for a pre-approved offer I got in the mail.

I learned the CrapOne lesson long time ago, I also canceled my first credit card issued by them.

Hey MP$40, do you still have the fidelity platinum card? I am interested in it. Do you just have to open a account with them and not actually trade anything or what is the deal. Do they hit ya with lots of fees? I have about 5,000 saved up and wanted to throw it into a fidelity account so I could either get my gold card free or a platinum for cheaper. Could you enlgihten me on your experience with the fidelity amex and if I only have 5,000, this would be a bad idea for me maybe? Thanks. I have been waiting for you to show up for a while, so I could ask ya:)

If you feel like making one more Amex phone call.. If I were you, I'd call the executive department. I've called them once and found them to be extremely helpful and able to credit annual fees in full for large issues. Perhaps it would ease your mind on their quality if the card were free for a year.

I will say this, lately Amex has had horrible customer service on our Delta Amex card and we almost got rid of it simply because Amex couldn't even log in the correct annual fee that they offered us. Took 5 calls and no correction. Called Exec Office and it was fixed that day. Still, nothing should take 6 calls to fix.

    Re: Closing the account

Cap One is a mixed bag. My current scores are in the 620 range and I can not get prime yet. Recent turn downs GM card and State Farm.

I have closed two Cap one cards immediately $500 credit line separate card established customer.

Closed two more after 18 months.

Still have 2, my first card started off at $300, bumped to $500 after 1 year. Recently bumped from $3,000 to $4,200 via the advocates office.
    Approx. 4 years old, 9.9%

2nd card K-mart bumped from $800 to $2,000 at the same time. Approx. 3 years old, 12.9%.

My father kept the $500 card joint with my Mother for 1 year - sent it back with a nasty letter.

They sent him an offer for separate his n hers cards each with a $10,000 limit. Low APR - the no hassle card - by invite only. Their credit scores mid 700's.

    It all depends.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Closing the account

Sorry for the late response...but here it goes:

In regards to the Fidelity AMEX card, it is what it is. The card is basically for show. I know this may sound ludicrous but I live in Silicon Valley. I deal with wealthy clients all day and even though I am 2 paychecks away from being homeless <joke>, I have to dress and act the part. That's just my reality. Hey, they don't need to know that I only have $20 in my checking account til Tuesday! :p

As far as benefits are concerned, the most use I've gotten out of the card is being able to hang out in the Admiral's Club at the airport. You just don't know how great that is when you're traveling. To me, paying the $320 annual fee (Fidelity picks up the other $75 of the total $395 fee) is worth it just for that if you travel alot. Next would be the rental car advantage. Having this card put me in the Hertz Gold club and YOU JUST DON'T KNOW how cool and convenient it is when you get to your destination and you need to get a rental car. You just walk up to the digital board, look for your name and space number, go to your car, get in and LEAVE! If you've experienced travel woes like I have, this is such a relief and time saver to be able to do.

So those are the only 2 uses I've gotten out of the card since getting it. I use the card alot in place of cash. It helps me control my spending but be advised, on the AMEX web site, it says that this particular card has no pre-set spending limit. This is a lie. There is a pre-set spending limit and that limit is whatever you have in your Fidelity account. They will NOT let you go even one penny over that (I learned that the hard way). One time I went over my limit by $40 (ATM machine gave me the money) and as soon as AMEX caught on, they IMMEDIATELY sent me a letter requesting the $40 ASAP!

You only need to open a Fidelity Brokerage account with $2500 (it use to be $5000) but BE AWARE, just because you open an account doesn't mean you automatically get the card. What's STUPID is that you have to qualify for the card just like you would if you were applying for a regular one (so they say). I can't remember how I got the card (you might want to do a search on my previous posts regarding this card) but I know at the time I applied they checked Equifax and I had a 650 (which is supposedly their cut off for approval). Now come on....do you really think I would of qualified for the regular Platinum Charge Card with a 650? Oh wait....that's what happened. Now I remember, I got the card in a sneaky way. I applied for the GOLD Fidelity Charge Card and then after I got it, I immediately called and said I wanted to UPGRADE to Platinum one. It was done with no problem. So there's a secret for ya! I did it that way because I knew I couldn't quality for the Platinum one the first time around. But to call and upgrade is NOTHING. They just change a digit or 2 on your Gold card and mail out a Platinum one.

    Um....no I DON'T! LOL...

Time is money, and I've let that incident go. Need to move on and it's not worth it to me to call. I just know what I need to do next time I travel.
