    Hi,

I ordered my credit reports just a few days back from all three CRAs. My old CapOne has been opened in Sep 1996, closed Jan 1998, but reported till Sep 2001 on Experian, Dec 1999 on TU and no report on Equifax.

Hope this is of some use to you.

wondering if they keep enough internal records on old closed accounts to verify payment history?

I am assuming that they do, since they bothered to send account information to CRAs up to 3 years from the last date of activity on the account.

In my Experian report, in the "Your Use of Credit" section where they specify the balances on each card every month, the cap-one entry has last balance $88 in 1998, followed by a string of $0s till Sep-2001.

Based on this empirical evidence, I am assuming that they do keep good internal records, at least for the last 3 years. If you are asking me if I know that for a FACT, then no, I don't.
