I had a car loan in 2000, that went delinquent in 2005. The lender, who is now defunct never repossessed the car, and the new lender only sent a few statements in 9/2005, no collection letters. Last year, I started getting collection letters from a collection agency, and noticed my credit report listed the debt 3 times: 1. by First lender, who's no longer in business, secondly, by new lender who acquired it and wrote off the debt, third by some collection agency in New York. I'm in California, and trying to clean up my credit. Should I request the credit agencies to delete multiple entries; how do I word it? Should I hire an attorney to negotiate a settlement, the car is worth $1200; the balance of the loan is $4320. People are telling to hold an auction instead? One attorney told me to sell it for scrap. What should I do? I would like to buy a house next year, and want this put behind me.
