Does anyone know what the relationship is between Card Services (Old Bethpage, NY) and Providian?

I believe Card Services is affiliated with Merrick Bank. A few years ago, Providian did a mass dump of certain accounts. The "fortunate ones" got to stay with Providian, while some accounts went to Chase, Emerge, and finally Merrick. One of my Providian accounts went to Merrick, which I immediately closed. Surprisingly, Providian has been pretty decent to deal with. They've lowered my APR and increased my CL consistently, and their new site with free monthly TU FICO updates is a nice perk.

Card Services is also used by Household, among other card issuers, so maybe they act as a clearing house of sorts.

we had settled his acct for 50% - they not only kept reporting it at the full amt as a charge off, they then proceeded to send the amt not incl in the settlement to a collection agency and when they (CA) were questioned about it, they apparently returned it to Providian, who sent it to yet another CA - all tolled, the first CA was also reporting the difference, so instead of showing a settled debt with a 0 balance, they were showing a charge off of $5500+ and a collection of $2700+ making it appear that there two diff accts (showing diff acct #s) with over $8k in CO and collection debt - this has stayed on the CR for over a year -

Did you get it in writhing in the settlement that they wouldn't do this?
If you didn't they can sell it to a CA and both them and the CA can report the amount not paid.

the settlement letter - now letters, as the original CA is the only one interested in CYA - has it in writing that it is settled on behalf of Providian in full - zero balance - and they have sent me a letter from Card Services recently in response to my barrage of letters saying how deeply sorry they are for the oversight - that it was settled "around the same time" that a protfolio of accounts was transferred to Card Services - yeah - that would explain why two more CAs "on behalf of Providian" kept trying to collect - I wrote them back, basically that I wasn't buying it - and am supposed to be getting back with a local consumer affairs attorney this week - I've had enough of the BS and their dancing around this - "oversight" my butt.
