    Caught TU in a Lie

I've been reading this board for a few weeks now and recently started to clean up the few negatives and screwed up accounts on my CRs.

About a month ago, I sent a dispute letter to TU regarding two accounts. These accounts are (were) with Sallie Mae servicing for one student loan (but TU has it twice, same ID # too, go figure...) TU has the first one listed with 0 balances (Most owed and Current Balance) and its listed as currently 120 days past due.

The second one (which has the same number and is for the same loan) is being listed with 1250 most owed and 1250 balance. It is listed as not being in re-payment, yet there are some late payments listed.

Now, this one loan was long ago consolidated with other loans through PHEAA. Sallie Mae hasn't owned these for three years and it was never in re-payment (i.e., how can a loan not in re-payment be late?). So, as a good consumer I sent a dispute letter to TU regarding this.

Well, last week I got a letter from TU saying they verified the tradelines with the Creditor and no changes would be made.

So, of course I'm a bit POed and I called Sallie Mae today and say, "How many loans do I have with you?" Answer, "None." "Then how in the heck did you verify these tradelines with Trans Union?" His answer, "We keep accurate records of all our dealings with CRAs. We have not had any contact with TU regarding these tradelines."

Well, well, well... How did TU verify this then? Simple, they LIED! I've heard other people on this board talk about the CRAs being deceptive and I guess I didn't quite believe it. Now I do.
Sorry this was so long, I just felt like venting about this.

Scout, I had the exact same thing happen. I had an account on all 3 bureaus that was not mine. I disputed. Exp & Eqf deleted quickly. TU verified over and over and over again. I called HFC, the creditor, they maintain that they were never contacted by TU & had already sent UDF's to have the tradeline deleted from all 3 CRA's. Liars!

I know I have a case, but it is not the next one in line! Ha! I will get to them however.

Thanks for the comments. I'm a bit frustrated about this but excited at the same time. I mean, little old me caught this huge company in a bold-faced lie.

Anyway, from my limited experience with the big three, TU seems to be the most difficult to deal with. They seem like they'll try to do anything to avoid changing a credit file (at least changing it when the consumer disputes, they have no problems adding erronous or even bogus info). Even if that means they have to deceive consumers. Oh well... Time to plan what to try next.

Scout, is your email on? if so, I'll send you some documentation tomorrow that might help you.

I had the same thing happen with TU on my one Sallie Mae Plus loan.

TU was showing it as two separate tradelines, one opened in Jan 2002 with balance of $6K, last payment Feb 2002 Acct xxx.

Second tradeline, same acct number, opened Mar2002, last payment April 2002, balance $6420. Duh,what's wrong here? << and note, accts would show as installment loans of $12K, not $6K, the way the tradelines were entered. This is important, because in their scoring models it looks as if I have twice as much installment debt as what I actually have.

I disputed online as acct2 being an inerror , and inaccurate continuation of tradeline one. Came back verified. I was absolutely astounded because there was no way that they could have gotten verification. BTW, Eq and Exp show the one and only one tradeline.

So, I disputed it again, online, and got the nasty you are being frivolous letter.

I was livid. so I sent faxed copies to TU of
    1. Sallie Mae printout showing only one loan, opened Jan2002, current balance $6420
    2. Sallie Mae statement showing only one loan.
    3. Letter of dispute faxed to Sallie Mae asking them to investigate TU inaccurate reporting of their tradeline
4.Letter to TU insisting that disputes be reinvestigated a second time (I'll find it on my other computer and email it or post tomorrow if you are interested.) It includes references to FTC opinions on reinvestigations. Advised I expected them to place notation of in dispute on CR so that if a lender requested a report...Advised they had to meet original investigation deadline. Advised that I would not accept deletion of both reports, only the deletion of inaccurate one.

Called the next day. TU rep confirmed that all six pages of fax had been received, advised that both trades lines were pending reinvestigation.

    We'll see.

Ask your oc's to issue a letter stating no such verification occured and bill the CRA for $1,000.

Re: Caught TU in a Lie

I talked to Sallie Mae yesterday. They wanted to see what TU was listing. So I faxed it over, along with TU's verification letter. So, I'll call back later today to see what they have to say.

If I was Sallie Mae, I'd be POed that TU was telling consumers that they verified with them when they actually hadn't. It makes Sallie Mae look bad. But, I'm sure they don't want to get on the wrong side of the CRAs either. They need each other...

Anyway, I'll post what Sallie Mae has to say about the docs I sent them when I hear from them. Thanks!
