CCN Steve--Making threads read-only

I made a suggestion on the main board that perhaps old posts (say over 6 months old) should be made read only so they can't be brought forward, as some posters have a tendency to do.

I think they are confusing, especially to new members who don't realize they're old. To delete them would detract from the board, as the information would be removed. If they're made read only, the information is still there for searching.

If more information becomes available about the topic, the old thread could be referenced in the new post.

What do the rest of you think?

1*This would make it harder to reference them to new members and they could miss information vital to their issues. Also a newbie could not bring the thread forward to ask questions or discuss it currently.

2*Just being old doesn't necessarily diminish their value nor does it necessarily mean the information contained there in is not applicable or revenant for today.

3*True but it would require more searching and cuts of another avenue of finding them.

    4*It ain't broke so don't fix it.

You can always put the link to it in a new thread that is more relevant.

I have been confused by many of these old threads myself, and I've been reading this board for over two years now. I often think "part of this sounds right, but part is really old. What is going on here?"

I appreciate your suggestion Hedwig, and of course it has merrit.

I just happen to be one who thinks the ability to repost to a thread, regardless of it's age, outweighs the benefit of closing it.

What I'd like to see happen is for everyone to learn to stick with one thread per their topic or company. And then whenever an update is appropriate to do it on that thread. Unfortunately what often happens is someone will update an old situation on a new thread, but then forget to referrence the old thread for background.

If everyone just did it MY way [LOLOL] there would ba far fewer threads and thus, much less confusion.

I think closing oldies would make that problem even worse than it already is.

    Whatcha think?

    :)

    hedwig,

Ah, yes, but unlike credit rebuilding in itself this is learned quickly. Like how to not double post.

I think it makes the CN board exciting and unique. Lends to its individual character.

Also, keeps us newbies on our toes.

To bump or not to bump is in question?

I certainly hope old threads do not become Read Only. Unless that included being able to do a Search on Read Only threads. But then again, if they are Read Only that sort of implies that they are not alive and not viable information for today.

I am all for keeping CN alive and active. :)

And think of the laughs lost if we can't occasionally bump "Experian killed my turtle"

    1* Sure does.
2*That would be a lot better thean scattering the story oet all over the board.
I got chewed out by a newbee the other day for even suggesting this to him. BTW thanks to rhe 2 pasters who stood up for me in that thread.
    3*Right on !

    • For what it counts, I totally agree. I've seen people saying "As I have previously posted ... ", which makes almost impossible for others to reply with an answer. They have to ask the same questions, the original poster have to give the same answers ... Not good.

About making the old threads Read Only - here is a sample of why they should stay as they are: Validation Letter to OC? (read the Doc's post, 04.10.2003) ...
