Does filing a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy prevent you from obtaining new student loans?

I filed ch. 7 while I was in the process of receiving loans and the only thing that happened was that they placed a hold for a while, but after discharge I continued receiving disbursements. I also know someone who filed ch. 7 in May/01? and applied for a student loan in Nov or Dec/01 and was approved.

There are very few reasons that will cause a person not to be able to get guaranteed student loans. Declaring either chap 7n or 13 BK is not one of them.

I agree with fla-tan about government student loans. they do not run a credit check. these are the subsidized and unsubsidized loans. but if you need more money over and above what the govmt max is then you have to go to the private loans...and they DO run a credit report and a bk or any probs could cause a denial of loan.

I agree. for the government guaranteed loans, there are no credit checks.
