Getting married and changing my last name to my wife's last name (much easier for others to remember, pronounce and spell). Do I have to notify the CRA's, or will they be informed once I contact the Social Security Administration? will this confuse the CRA's?
I haven't changed my name yet either. I'd like to know also... Congratulations on your upcoming nuptuals!!!
Just a copy? or a certified copy? I have a photo copy, still waiting for certified copy of marriage certificate in order to do the name thing. I wonder if I could just call my CC up and tell them my new name....
Erica, I never changed my name with the credit bureaus, but I did change it with all my credit card companies and banks. They will report the change to the credit bureaus. My consumer report shows my married name. If you like you could send the bureaus the marriage certificate and social security card, but I don't like sending them that kind of information. If you give it 2-3 months all the bureaus will have the correct name through your creditors. Good luck. Dani
WOW! Is that becoming popular? I remember like 7 years ago a friend of mine told me that he was going to do that (because he HATED his last name). I didn't know that it worked both ways...
Yep, it is getting more common. A friend of mine did it because his fiancee's family name would ahve died out otherwise. She was the last "Smith" left in her family, so if she changed her last name...there goes the leniage. He had several brothers and nephews to carry on his family name, so he didn't mind at all. FYI, thanks for all this good advice. I'll be doing the "name change thing" in a few months, too!
